About Laser Vein Removal
Usually located on the face, upper thigh, calf, or ankle, spider veins are little blood vessels that branch and become visible underneath the skin. Caused by many factors, like genetics, age, prolonged standing, and hormones, spider veins may be purple, red, and blue, which makes them hard to mask. These unattractive little veins typically multiply over the years and become more visible so it is advisable to get help when you first notice them. Spider veins are extremely common, affecting millions of men and women and making them self-conscious about their appearance.
Board-certified dermatologist Tracy Evans offers several different minimally invasive laser vein treatments that safely cause the vein to close up and be reabsorbed by the body. If you are interested in decreasing the visibility of the blood vessels on your face or body, visit Pacific Skin Corte Madera for a consultation. Dr. Evans can help you determine which laser vein therapy is best for you.
"I went in to have a basal spot on my back removed. I’ve been a patient of Dr. Evans for years. She’s the best. I’ve never had a bad experience with her or anyone that works for her. She’s an excellent doctor and I trust her judgment/diagnoses completely. I particularly appreciated the way the procedure was handled. Everything is thoroughly explained and as they’re ‘working’ they tell you exactly what they’re about to do so there are no surprises. I highly recommend Dr. Evans (and in fact have recommended her to many of my friends). Having basal cells removed (I think the procedure is called Mose) is not a pleasant experience but Dr. Evans and her staff make it as pleasant and painless as possible"- A.D. / Google / May 30, 2019

Nonsurgical vein therapy sessions at Pacific Skin are designed to minimize the look of tiny and mid-sized veins on the body and face. These visible blood vessels, or spider veins, are rarely a medical issue; however, they often cause people to feel embarrassed or self-conscious. Most patients who choose to have laser vein removal end up feeling more comfortable wearing clothes that show their legs and are able to stop using excessive makeup. Before having your laser vein treatment, it is important to talk to Dr. Evans about your realistic expectations and to be sure you are seeking improvement for your spider veins on your own accord.
While laser vein removal is safe for most individuals, there are a few factors that may limit your eligibility:
- Blood disease or bleeding problems
- Certain chronic health conditions
- A history of blood clots
Nonsurgical laser vein removal sessions are completed in our Corte Madera, CA office in around 20 minutes, depending on the number of areas being addressed. For your laser vein reduction, you will be asked to relax in a reclined position in one of our treatment rooms as the skin is cleaned. Dr. Evans will then pass the laser handpiece across the skin to safely heat up the targeted spider vein. The abnormal blood vessel soaks in the energy of the laser, which closes the walls of the veins. You may feel a slight tingling during the treatment or something more like a rubber band being snapped on the skin, but most patients do not describe this as painful. After your session, you will be able to leave immediately to get back to your regular routine.
What to Expect
Right after your laser vein reduction session, you may notice swelling, redness, and bruising on the treatment area. Some patients may have a small bump as well. These side effects are usually quite tolerable and dissipate in just a few days. For optimal healing, compression or support garments may be worn to encourage the blood circulation.
Certain patients may notice improvements right away, but most outcomes develop over a period of 2 – 3 weeks. This is due to the nature of the treatment, which is essentially diverting blood flow and takes some time to be effective. In your consultation with Dr. Evans, your potential results will be reviewed, as well as suggestions on the number of treatments necessary to get your optimal results. Most patients require 2 – 6 sessions scheduled 4 – 6 weeks apart. Depending on the cause of your spider veins, you may be prone to having new ones appear later on in the same or different area.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does laser vein removal cost?
Your laser vein removal treatment will be priced according to the number of veins being addressed and the number of sessions necessary to get your ideal results. At your consultation, Dr. Evans will assess your veins, including the size and where they are located, to develop your custom treatment plan. She can then estimate your costs. Pacific Skin Corte Madera accepts several payment methods, and we regularly offer deals on certain procedures.
Should I get laser vein removal or sclerotherapy?
This will depend on the type of vein you want to have treated. Although laser treatment and sclerotherapy have the same result, they work in different ways. Laser vein removal works best for spider veins and other veins that are too small to easily inject with sclerosant. Sclerotherapy works well for larger, bulging varicose veins and for patients with darker skin tones that react poorly to lasers. Our team will help you select your treatment method, depending on your individual needs.
Does the vein go away?
Yes, the vein eventually goes away. A laser vein treatment uses heat energy to stress and degrade the blood vessel, which then weakens and closes up. After the vein has collapsed, it will take 1 – 2 months for the vein to be reabsorbed and fade away. The laser system is precise and focuses on the vein so it won't damage your skin.
Where can laser vein removal be used?
Unwanted spider veins are often located on your face, thighs, lower legs, and near your ankles. For areas in both the face and body, laser vein removal can be helpful in reducing the appearance of unwanted veins. Our cutting-edge laser system works with precision so only the vein is targeted, leaving the nearby tissue and skin unharmed.
Is laser vein removal painful?
Patients typically feel a tingling or snapping sensation when the laser is aimed at the target. It might be slightly uncomfortable but is not generally considered painful. Many laser systems, like ours, are equipped with a built-in safety feature that produces a cooling effect. This decreases discomfort while also preventing the laser from becoming too hot, which may cause damage.
