What is a PDO Thread Lift and How Does it Work?

You don’t have to go under the knife to achieve a natural-looking facelift. A PDO thread lift is a nonsurgical procedure that tightens the skin with little to no downtime. But what is a polydioxanone thread lift, and how does it work on issues like fine lines and wrinkles? Board-certified physician Dr. Tracy Evans has extensive experience performing this treatment and can guide you through the process. We can help you achieve a fresh and youthful appearance once again.

At this time of uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus, we want to let you know that our offices remain open. Please know that both of our locations, in Corte Madera and San Francisco, CA, strictly adhere to CDC recommendations and take precautions to make sure we provide a safe and healthy environment for patients. Learn how Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology can conveniently address signs of aging with a skin care consultation today.

What is a polydioxanone thread lift?

PDO threads are used in all kinds of surgeries because they can boost collagen and stimulate new tissue growth. During a thread lift procedure, our team inserts surgical-grade threads into the sagging tissue and contours the area by gently pulling on them. PDO threads are available in a range of sizes so they can be tailored to address your individual needs. Thinner threads are often used to restore volume and rejuvenate the cheeks and chin, while thicker threads are perfect for lifting the skin of the jowls and neck.

A PDO thread lift can be performed on any area of the face or neck to correct fine lines and wrinkles, crow's feet, and early signs of aging. The procedure is noninvasive, and patients can walk out of the office without any noticeable incisions or scars afterward. In fact, polydioxanone thread lifting is perfect for patients who are not interested in or quite ready for plastic surgery. When you visit Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera and San Francisco, we may suggest combining other treatments, such as dermal fillers or BOTOX® wrinkle relaxers to your appointment and enhance your results.

Candidates for polydioxanone thread lifting

When you meet with Dr. Evans and our talented team of providers, we will perform an evaluation of your skin to determine your candidacy and see if this is right for you. Patients with underlying health conditions or severely sagging skin may not be advised to undergo a PDO thread lift at this time. The same goes for individuals with significantly sun-damaged or hyper-pigmented skin. Generally, most people are able to benefit from this minimally invasive skin tightening lift at our practice.

So what is a polydioxanone thread lift? Based on the area you wish to address, a PDO thread lift can be performed in about an hour with local anesthesia. Dr. Evans and her providers will mark the exact spots on your face where our team will inject the threads. Then, with a thin needle, we place the threads into the target areas. Even though you will be awake for treatment, you won’t feel discomfort or pain. Your specialty trained practitioner will gently tug on the threads to produce the lifting effect.

What to expect after a PDO thread lift

Some patients will see their new results immediately following polydioxanone thread lifting. This usually depends on your original cosmetic goals and the type of thread chosen during the consultation. For patients who want to improve facial volume, the most optimal results will come from a treatment paired with use of dermal fillers and will continue to develop over  8 – 12 weeks. This continued "blossoming of the results" over the coming weeks is because it takes time for the body to produce new collagen in the face and neck area in response to the threads.

The treatment sites may feel a little sore for about two weeks, but cold compresses can help with any discomfort. If you take good care of your skin and wear sunscreen to protect yourself from UV rays, you can expect the results to last for up to a year. For any additional information about this minimally invasive mini facelift and treating issues, such as crow’s feet, skin laxity, loss of volume, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with our team today.
