About IPL

If you are bothered by how your skin appears because of dark spots, sun damage, and more, Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera can help. We will perform a skin consultation to determine if you could benefit from IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy. A photofacial with IPL is a treatment that rejuvenates the skin for adults with hyperpigmentation problems on their neck, face, and hands. It can also reduce mild acne scars, dark eye circles, and fine lines. A photofacial is a noninvasive process; however, it can be highly effective and create amazing outcomes. Board-certified dermatologist Tracy Evans uses intense pulses of light to target and dissolve the pigmented cells. The treatment also stimulates the natural healing process and increases the production of collagen. As the added nutrients take effect, you should begin to see a healthier complexion with an improved tone and decreased spots of pigmentation.

Ideal Candidates

An IPL photofacial reaches the deeper layers of your skin to treat complexion issues with minimal or no recovery needed. Ideal candidates for an IPL photofacial at Pacific Skin, in Marin, are those who have complexion problems, such as rosacea, sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), acne scars, visible pores, redness, freckles, sun and age spots, or spider veins. Tracy Evans, M.D. or one of our dermatological professionals will examine your areas of concern during your initial consultation to determine if you could benefit from an IPL photofacial. Almost everyone is a candidate for this gentle treatment, but be sure to mention any medications that can make your skin more sensitive to the sun as these can increase the risk of complications.

Procedure Technique

A photofacial can be performed in about 20 – 45 minutes if no other treatments are performed. To prepare your skin for the IPL facial, your technician will wash and dry your face and protect your eyes with shields. The photofacial is performed using the Lumenis® M22 laser through a handheld wand that is passed over the skin. Most patients do report some mild discomfort that feels like a rubber band being snapped on the skin, but it's usually bearable since the treatments are relatively quick. However, if you are anxious about discomfort, we can apply a topical numbing cream prior to your procedure.

What to Expect

There usually is no recovery period needed after an IPL photofacial, but your complexion will be a little red and swollen when you leave our office. This will go away naturally in about a day and can be masked with cosmetics if you prefer. Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology recommends that you use a cream to minimize any irritation and promote healing. It may also help to use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to help decrease swelling. After 2 – 5 days, the irregularities under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then start to flake away. It is necessary to protect your skin with sunscreen as often as possible after an IPL photofacial treatment and to not pick at your skin while it heals. You will have visible improvements after your first treatment, but your complexion will attain ideal results with multiple photofacial treatments. Tracy Evans, M.D. recommends that most patients get 3 – 6 sessions scheduled every four weeks at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does IPL cost?
Your skin is unique so your cost for IPL treatments will vary based on your goals. Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology in Corte Madera often offers special deals and packages, and we take several different payment methods to help make treatments more affordable. At your consultation, we can recommend how many sessions are needed to fit your needs and goals and then discuss the costs.

How quick are the results from IPL?
Most patients will experience a disappearance or significant reduction in skin irregularities after a series of treatment sessions spaced several weeks apart. However, results depend on the type and severity of the condition being treated. Sun spots and other forms of sun damage tend to darken after treatment and then shed from the skin after 1 – 2 weeks. Patients with rosacea often notice a decrease in redness and a return to a more normal skin tone within a week. Those with spider veins may experience a full or partial fading of affected vessels after 10 – 14 days.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
Photofacials are considered safe and effective for most patients with only a minor risk of bruising and redness, which usually fade on their own. Most patients are ideal candidates for photofacials, though one possible contraindication for photofacial treatment is medication that increases photosensitivity. If you use a topical or oral medicine that makes you more sensitive to light, this may not be the right form of treatment. Be sure to discuss your medical history and any medications during your consultation with Dr. Evans.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
To prepare for an IPL treatment, patients are asked to avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for 2 – 4 weeks before their appointment. You might need to stop using certain medications and topical creams, like Retin-A, a few days before your procedure, and you may want to start taking ibuprofen or aspirin 5 – 7 days before your appointment to reduce inflammation, which lowers your chance of bruising. You also need to use sun protection (like a hat and sunscreen).

Why should I get multiple IPL sessions?
We recommend getting a series of IPL treatments to produce natural-looking improvements to your complexion. Every treatment will reduce spots and other surface irregularities. Having several treatments also produces longer-lasting improvements.
