About Laser Hair Removal

Hair removal with a laser has become one of the most popular elective treatments in America. It's an effective option for the long-term reduction of excessive or unwanted hair growth on the body and face. This procedure frequently leaves the skin feeling and looking smoother and produces more longer-lasting results compared to other common hair removal methods. Board-certified dermatologist Tracy Evans performs laser hair removal with the innovative Lumenis® technology to help her patients end the time-consuming cycles of tweezing, shaving, waxing, and hair-removal creams. At Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera, CA, we offer safe and fast laser hair removal services for women and men for the back, legs, arms, face, chest, armpits, bikini area, and more. Contact our office today if this sounds like the solution for you.

Ideal Candidates

The patients who respond the best to laser hair removal are typically those with dark hair and light skin. This is because the laser works by targeting the melanin (pigment) in the hair. However, lighter hair or tan skin does not necessarily rule you out — it's important to let Dr. Evans evaluate your hair and complexion so she can advise you about your options. Most of our patients are interested in laser hair removal due to having unwanted, excessive, or very noticeable hair on certain areas of the face or body. This hair may be caused by medication, hormonal changes, heredity, or even some diseases. Our most common areas for hair removal are:

  • Chin
  • Upper lip
  • Chest
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Bikini line
  • Legs

Procedure Technique

Most patients need at least five treatments scheduled 4 – 6 weeks apart to see ideal results. This is because your hair grows in cycles, and each hair is in its own cycle phase. The laser can only affect a hair in the growth phase so the hairs in the dormant phase will have to be treated later when they have moved to the growth phase. Different parts of the body also have cycles of different lengths, which can affect the timing and number of your treatments. Before and throughout your treatment, we will ask you to avoid tanning and self-tanning because laser hair removal has the best results when there is a strong contrast between your hair and skin color.

On the day of your laser hair removal appointment, we will first cleanse the areas of your face and body being treated to eliminate oil, dirt, and moisturizers. During the procedure, Dr. Evans or one of her professional team members will gently stretch out the treatment area to create a clear pathway between the root of the hair follicle and the laser. The laser's energy will focus on the pigment of the follicle, which stops the hair from growing again. The state-of-the-art technology we use at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology targets only the hair follicle to preserve the skin and other tissue in the area being treated.

What to Expect

Although laser hair removal is a relatively gentle treatment, the treated areas of your skin may look like they have a light sunburn since lasers are used. Immediately following your session, you will likely experience a bit of swelling, soreness, and red skin, but this should calm down and clear up within just a few days. After your session, you will be able to go back to most of your normal routine, but you need to avoid heavy activity (sweating and straining) for at least a day to let the treated skin recover. At home following your appointment, we suggest soothing creams or ice packs to treat any mild discomfort. You will need to avoid sun exposure as much as possible throughout your full series of treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does laser hair removal cost?
The cost of laser hair removal depends on the size and number of areas being treated and how many treatment sessions you will need. To understand the benefits of laser hair removal, consider the energy and time you put into shaving, waxing, or other methods. This is why laser hair removal is generally cheaper and more convenient. At your consultation, we will develop your treatment plan, including our recommended number of treatments, to be able to determine your cost.

Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal produces long-lasting improvements and is considered an effective treatment. While patients can enjoy the results of the procedure for a long time, laser hair removal is technically semi-permanent since some follicles can remain unaffected. However, most patients find that the majority of their unwanted hair stops growing once their plan is finished. If a few hairs are still growing, they are lighter, finer, and easier to manage. More laser sessions may be needed to address new growth and any stragglers.

Why are so many laser hair removal sessions required?
Your hair growth occurs in phases. When some follicles are growing, other follicles are resting. With every follicle in a different stage, it is simply not possible to get every hair in one treatment. Several sessions are suggested to target each follicle while it's active. These sessions have to be spread out over time to make sure they occur during growth phases.

Is there any other way to effectively remove hair?
Aside from laser hair removal, only electrolysis can remove hair with long-lasting results. Electrolysis performed by a dermatologist or other health professional (not at home) can destroy hair follicles, though more sessions are necessary, and it can be more expensive. However, electrolysis might be the best solution for those with very light hair or dark skin.

Can I get other treatments at the same time?
At Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology, we do not typically perform any other treatments at the same time on the same area of skin. While laser treatments are safe when performed by a professional, it is not a good idea to overdo it in any one area. We are happy to provide other skin care services with laser hair removal, like BOTOX, dermal fillers, and certain skin rejuvenation procedures, on other areas that have not been laser treated.

Rid Yourself of Razors

Unwanted or excessive hair can be an inconvenient nuisance or even cause social anxiety. Fortunately, laser hair removal treatments offer an effective, long-lasting, and relatively painless alternative to waxing, shaving, and plucking. Contact Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology for a consultation with Dr. Tracy Evans to find out how this treatment could save you time, money, and the recurring discomfort of other hair removal methods. We have helped hundreds of Corte Madera men and women become hair- and care-free.
