About Thread Lifts

Tracy Evans, M.D. performs polydioxanone (PDO) thread lifts at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology to Corte Madera area men and women. PDO thread lifts are a much less invasive alternative to surgical facelifts and can smooth, firm, and contour mildly or moderately lax skin. Patients who have early signs of aging or lines and wrinkles due to smoking, squinting, frowning, etc., can obtain beautiful results with this advanced yet simple procedure.

The PDO threads used in a thread lift are traditionally used in surgeries, such as heart surgery, because they are able to boost collagen and stimulate the regrowth of tissue. During a thread lift procedure, Dr. Evans inserts these surgical-grade threads into the lax or sagging tissue and then is able to lift and contour the tissue by gently pulling on them. Contact Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology if you would like to learn more about PDO thread lifts with Dr. Evans.

Ideal Candidates

A PDO thread lift can be done on any area of the face or neck to smooth lines and wrinkles, including laugh lines, smoker's lines, slight jowls, and Crow's feet. Thread lifts produce the best results for those noticing early signs of aging and who want to delay their progression without surgery. At Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology, our patients often combine other treatments, such as dermal fillers or BOTOX, to their PDO thread lift appointment to enhance their results.

Procedure Technique

Depending on the area of your face and type of issue you wish to address, your PDO thread lift will be performed in about one hour with one or more of the three types of PDO thread. "Lift" threads are designed with tiny barbs that are able to gently grab the tissue to be lifted. "Twist" threads look somewhat like the threading of a screw and produce a filler effect. "Smooth" threads are more delicate and are used to smooth out very fine lines, like Crow's feet and smoker's lines.

At Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology, Dr. Evans performs PDO thread lifts in our comfortable office with local anesthesia. This means you will be awake for the treatment, but you won't feel any pain. The exact places on your face where Dr. Evans needs to inject the threads will be marked before she begins. Then, using an extremely thin needle, she will place the threads into the target areas of tissue. Depending on your treatment plan, the threads will begin to work on their own to build volume and collagen, or Dr. Evans will gently tug them upward to produce the lifting effect.

What to Expect

Whether or not you will see any results immediately following your PDO thread lift will depend on the goal of the procedure and what type of thread was used. If you have a lifting procedure done with "lift" threads, you will see your results right away. If "twist" or "smooth" threads are used to create volume or improve contour, you may see some improvement right away, but your ultimate results won't be visible for 8 – 12 weeks.

There is very little downtime after a PDO thread lift. The tiny wounds created by the needle will be a bit sore and red for about two weeks, but this is easily covered with makeup. Cold compresses also help with any discomfort. If you take great care of your skin, including always using sunscreen and following a healthy skin care regimen, your results can last up to a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of a thread lift?
Thread lift costs depend on the number and type of threads used, as well as how many treatment areas you will have. At your consultation, Dr. Evans will be able to develop a thread lift plan to address all of your cosmetic goals. Then she will be able to estimate your costs. Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology accepts many payment types, and we can talk to you about finding financing as well.

Should I get a thread lift or a facelift?
Thread lifts are a great alternative to facelifts for patients who do not yet have advanced signs of aging. If you have mild to medium skin thinness and laxity, a thread lift can offer beautiful results and help you delay the invasiveness and long recovery of a surgical facelift. However, if you already have the later effects of aging, surgery may be a better option.

Do PDO thread lifts cause scars?
Almost no patients develop any scars from PDO thread lifts. The threads are injected into the target tissue with an extremely fine needle, which creates a very tiny puncture. Dr. Evans or someone on her team will give you instructions after your procedure on how to keep your skin healthy and scar-free.

Can I have other treatments with my PDO thread lift?
Yes. Our thread lift patients often opt to have injectable fillers or wrinkle relaxers done at the same time as their lifts to enhance results. Some patients also choose to have laser rejuvenation. If your signs of aging are more advanced, these additions can significantly improve your results. Dr. Evans will be glad to discuss all of your options with you at your consultation.

How natural will my results look?
As with any cosmetic treatment, it is very important that you choose an experienced doctor or medical professional to perform your procedure. When done correctly, a thread lift should provide very natural-looking results — the kind of results that look beautiful, but no one knows you've had anything done. Dr. Evans strives for the most natural results.

subtle, natural-looking lift

At some point, most people begin to notice signs of aging and start to consider the idea of a cosmetic procedure. A minimally invasive thread lift could be the solution for those who simply do not like the idea of surgery or wish to delay it. If you are in the earlier stages of aging or are interested in addressing mild jowls, smoker's lines, and Crow's feet, contact us at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera.
