What is Botox?

BOTOX injections are an incredibly popular treatment for adult women and men who have developed dynamic lines and wrinkles in the top portion of the face. Dynamic lines (as opposed to static lines) are those that appear due to repetitive facial expressions, such as frowning and squinting. Eventually, these lines stay visible in the skin, even when your face is relaxed. BOTOX is a purified strain of type A botulinum toxin that is injected into the facial muscles in order to weaken or stop their movement, which gives the skin time to become smooth again. BOTOX injections work as an amazing facial rejuvenation treatment because they can significantly reduce the visible effects of aging and dynamic lines in the upper face. The injections are usually given between the brows, around the eyes, and throughout the forehead.

At Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology in Marin County, Dr. Tracy Evans and her professional medical staff are pleased to provide BOTOX to area patients. If you are considering having your first injections or are simply ready for your touch up, schedule your appointment with us today.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Botox?

BOTOX is used to address dynamic lines rather than static lines on the forehead and around the eyes. Dynamic lines are caused by repeated facial expressions, whereas static lines appear due to thinning or sagging skin.

BOTOX injections are an effective solution if you have obvious forehead wrinkles or frown lines between the brows. It can also address Crow's feet around the eyes. Many of our patients use BOTOX injections as a preventive, anti-aging treatment, even before dynamic wrinkles have formed. Reducing the frequency of making certain expressions over time can significantly delay the appearance of the dynamic lines. A combination of BOTOX and a dermal filler can be a great option if your lines are quite deep.

How is Botox Performed?

BOTOX injectable treatments are available as an outpatient procedure at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera. It is possible that Dr. Evans may perform your injections during your consultation, or you might schedule your treatment for a different appointment. On the day of your injections, we will clean your skin and prepare by marking the spots where the injections are needed. Dr. Evans determines these spots by observing you make certain expressions, such as squinting and frowning. Once the best spots are marked, she will use a very small needle to introduce the BOTOX into your muscles. If you are worried about feeling the needle, you may ask for a topical numbing cream. However, most patients don't need it.

After your injections, we will apply a cool compress for several minutes to help decrease discomfort, swelling, and bruising. BOTOX treatments usually take 10 – 15 minutes, after which you may get back to your usual day almost right away.

What Can I Expect after Botox?

Following a BOTOX injection, patients can return to their typical schedules, although strenuous activities, like exercise, should be postponed for a minimum of a day. You will need to sleep with your head propped up for at least one night and avoid touching your injection areas, which can accidentally spread the BOTOX. The treated areas of your face may be a bit bruised, red, or swollen for 2 – 3 days, but BOTOX does not typically have lasting side effects. Most patients will be able to see their ultimate results within about a week of the injections, and these results should remain for 3 – 4 months. Dr. Evans or one of her professional team members will discuss scheduling your touch-up sessions at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox

How much do BOTOX injections cost?
The total cost for BOTOX injections will be based on the amount of product needed. This varies to fit your unique goals. In your consultation, Dr. Evans will form your custom treatment plan, and then she can discuss cost estimates. If you'd like to save money, ask for more information on the Brilliant Distinctions Rewards Program, which allows you to start earning points for BOTOX and other products from Allergan, including JUVÉDERM®.

How long does BOTOX last?
Improvements from BOTOX may be visible for as long as four months. Usually, patients schedule a visit every quarter to sustain their results; however, you can come back earlier. If you're using BOTOX before wrinkles are visible for a proactive measure, you can schedule visits further apart. After hearing your concerns and forming your BOTOX plan, Dr. Evans will be able to tell you when you should make your next visit.

What's the difference between wrinkle relaxers and fillers?
Injectable wrinkle relaxers and injectable dermal fillers are both treatments that improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. BOTOX works by relaxing overused muscles in your face that create dynamic wrinkles, including frown lines, Crow's feet, and forehead wrinkles. Dermal fillers increase volume below the skin to fill out depressions and improve fine lines throughout your face. Based on your goals, Dr. Evans may suggest BOTOX, fillers, or a "liquid facelift," which combines both.

What's the difference between BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin?
BOTOX, XEOMIN®, and Dysport® are brands of injectable wrinkle relaxers that contain botulinum toxin. They all relax the treated muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles; however, each brand is made to treat specific needs. Some of the small differences between them include the amount in each dose, how far the treatment spreads, and how long the results last. Dr. Evans will select the best one to achieve your goals.

Is BOTOX safe?
As long as it is applied correctly, BOTOX should not cause serious complications. However, it's important to choose someone with experience and training injecting BOTOX, such as Dr. Evans, an experienced dermatologist in Marin County. Overinjecting BOTOX may give you bad results. An expert injector will apply the right dose to safely relax the targeted muscles without affecting nearby muscles. BOTOX is quickly becoming one of the most requested cosmetic treatments and has earned approval from the FDA. Along with its cosmetic uses, BOTOX can also be used as a treatment for medical issues, including excessive sweating, facial spasms, migraines, and uncontrollable blinking.
