About Dysport

Medical director of Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera, Tracy Evans, M.D. offers patients several nonsurgical options for rejuvenating their skin. One of those options is Dysport, an injectable wrinkle relaxer that acts like BOTOX to smooth the appearance of certain dynamic wrinkles on the face. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by facial expressions and movements (like smiling, laughing, and frowning) that we all make thousands of times over the years. These expressions cause the skin over the muscle to have a grooved line that can be seen even when the face is resting. Dysport is FDA approved to temporarily block the signals to the glabellar muscles between the eyebrows to address the deep "number 11" that forms from frowning. It can also be used to address groups of fine lines, such as Crow's feet and smoker's lines. If you are interested in how Dysport or other wrinkle relaxers might benefit you, contact Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology to schedule a consultation.

Ideal Candidates

Dysport is specifically designed and FDA approved to be used on moderate to severe glabellar lines, or the vertical lines that form between the eyebrows when frowning. If your glabellar lines are mild, Dysport may not be the best option. Dr. Evans can talk to you at your consultation about the degree of your vertical lines and which wrinkle relaxer to choose.

Dysport also has a bit more tendency to spread out from the treatment area, which means you should be careful to choose an experienced doctor or injector. The tendency can be a good thing when used correctly as it can treat areas with small groupings of lines, such as the Crow's feet, with a more natural look. Finally, some candidates may choose to go with Dysport because it can have slightly quicker results that BOTOX, though it does require more injections.

Procedure Technique

Injections of Dysport are administered in one of our private treatment rooms and can take 15 – 30 minutes. A local anesthetic or numbing cream is generally unnecessary because the Dysport is injected using a fine needle that creates little pain. However, you can request an anesthetic if you feel concerned. The treatment area will be cleaned, and Dr. Evans will carefully and strategically perform your Dysport injections. We will apply a cold compress for several minutes after your treatment to lessen bruising and swelling, and then you are free to go and get back to your day. However, you should avoid taxing activities, like exercise, for at least one day.

What to Expect

Following a Dysport session, you may see light redness and swelling at and around the injected area, but this generally will disappear within 1 – 3 days. You should sleep propped up for at least one night and may want to apply cold compresses if needed. Improvements are commonly noticeable in 1 – 3 days as your skin is allowed to become softer and smoother without the interruption of the muscle contractions. Your results should remain for around 3 – 4 months, and more injections may be done at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera to extend your results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Dysport cost?
The total cost will depend on how much Dysport is required for your treatment. In your initial consultation, we will develop your unique treatment plan so we can offer a cost estimate. Ask about our current injectable treatment specials at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera and which methods of payment we take.

What's the difference between Dysport and BOTOX?
BOTOX and Dysport are cosmetic injections that improve dynamic wrinkles. Dysport results can sometimes develop more quickly than BOTOX, but BOTOX might require fewer injections. Additionally, Dysport injections can tend to spread if not performed properly so it is very important to choose an experienced doctor, like Dr. Evans. At your consultation, we will discuss whether Dysport or another wrinkle relaxer is best for your treatment.

Should I get Dysport or a wrinkle filler?
Many patients do not understand the different uses for wrinkle relaxers and fillers. A relaxer addresses dynamic wrinkles, whereas a filler addresses static wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repetitive motions, for example, laughing, smiling, frowning, and other expressions. Dysport relaxes the creased muscle under the skin to smooth the dynamic wrinkle. Static lines are from decreased skin elasticity so a dermal filler adds volume to the area so it is even. In your consultation, we will ask about your concerns and goals to help you determine if a wrinkle relaxer, a filler, or both will deliver your desired outcome.

Can Dysport be combined with othecxz              r treatments?
Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera offers a number of aesthetic treatments that can be added to boost your Dysport results. Based on your areas of concern, your personalized plan might include Dysport, a filler for static lines or volume in your cheeks and lips, plus a skin treatment. We encourage you to be open during your initial consultation so we can make a plan that provides an outcome you're thrilled with.

How often should I get Dysport injections?
Dysport injection results may last for as long as four months. In your initial consultation, we will suggest how often you should get injections at our office in Corte Madera, CA to sustain your results. You might want to schedule injections sooner or further apart once you know how Dysport works on your wrinkles.
