About Kybella

Both men and women can develop stubborn pockets of fat in the submental area that create the appearance of a "double chin." This submental (below the chin) fat can be caused by weight fluctuations, aging, or genetics and leads to a softer, less-defined jawline and chin. Corte Madera, CA dermatologist Tracy Evans is excited to be able to provide a revolutionary technique, Kybella, to assist her patients who are unhappy with the look of their double chins. Kybella is a new, FDA-approved nonsurgical option to address upper neck/under-chin fat. The active component in Kybella is a synthetically made version of deoxycholic acid, which works similarly to the body's natural DA to dissolve and absorb fat cells. After just a few treatments in which it is injected beneath the chin, there is a visible decrease in the amount of fat present. Since this fat is dissolved and absorbed, the cells will not regenerate so you can enjoy your new slender neck and defined jawline for years to come. If you are bothered by your double chin, contact us at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera to schedule your Kybella consultation.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidates for Kybella injections are patients who have stubborn submental (upper throat/under the chin) fat that doesn't respond to diet and exercise. You can think of Kybella as a nonsurgical form of liposuction — but only for under the chin. Kybella injections are not a weight loss treatment so you should be at or near a healthy, stable weight. This treatment is able to dissolve small to moderate pockets of fat resulting from genetics, aging, and several other factors; however, if you have significant submental fat, it is not recommended. Kybella injections at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera are designed to create a sleeker, more defined jawline and submental area.

Procedure Technique

During your consultation with Dr. Evans, she will design your treatment plan to help improve your chin profile. During the treatments, Dr. Evans will typically apply a numbing cream to the submental area before administering your Kybella via multiple small injections. Based on your personal treatment plan, you may choose to receive additional sessions for ideal results. Each session lasts about 15 minutes, and patients may receive up to six treatment sessions. Our staff will schedule your sessions at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera about 6 – 8 weeks apart.

What to Expect

After each Kybella injection session, you will be allowed to leave our office and return to your daily routine. You may notice short-term numbness, bruising, or swelling below your chin, although this shouldn't last more than a couple of days. You should contact Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology Corte Madera right away if you notice any unusual symptoms, including difficulty swallowing, facial muscle weakness, or uneven facial expressions. While the fat that is eliminated cannot regenerate, the unaffected cells can grow larger so you need to keep a stable weight after your Kybella treatments to keep new pockets of fat from developing. Ideal results after your series of treatments are a sleeker and slimmer jawline and profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Kybella treatments cost?
Kybella treatment costs will vary based on how many injections and how many sessions you need. In your initial consultation, a personalized treatment plan will be made to reach your goals. A member of our staff will also review the payment methods we accept.

How does Kybella work?
Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, is designed to break down fat cells in the upper neck. Once the fat cells are eliminated, they cannot regenerate. This is why more injections shouldn't be needed as soon as you have met your goal.

Can Kybella be used anywhere other than the chin?
Right now, Kybella is only FDA approved for the submental area (upper neck/under the chin), which means doctors and other practitioners are not permitted to treat other areas of the face or body.

Am I eligible for a Kybella treatment?
During your consultation, Dr. Evans will ask you a few questions to make sure you are a candidate for Kybella treatments. You need to be at least 18 years old, not breastfeeding or pregnant, and you should not have an active infection in or around your neck. It is important that you answer all of Dr. Evans's questions honestly so she can be sure Kybella injections are safe for you.

How many Kybella sessions will I need?
At your initial consultation, Dr. Evans will design your personalized injection plan to match your cosmetic goals. Depending on your age and the amount of fat present, patients usually need 2 – 6 Kybella injections to achieve their goals. Kybella appointments need to be made around 30 days apart. You shouldn't receive any more than six injections.
